Zambia arrests 15 year-old boy for defaming the president in Facebook post

Written by New Nigerian Politics Staff Writer – African Bureau – Zambian authorities have arrested a 15 year-old boy for alleged defamation of the president of the republic on Facebook. The boy who was arrested on Monday and lives in a small town of Kapiri Mposhi, was charged with three counts of libel against President Edgar Lunga who assumed office in 2015. The boy allegedly stated in his Facebook page – “Which other name can you name a dog apart from Edgar Lungu.” Another post read –  “We are better off as a country without Edgar Lungu.” The boy faces five years in prison if found guilty.  President Edgar Lunga has been accused of increasing heavy handedness since assuming office and as reelection approaches.  In the last several months, many of his critics have been arrested in what experts say is an attempt to consolidate power.
