10 killed in Taraba over land dispute

TEN persons were reportedly killed, on Thursday, in Kona village near Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, following a land dispute between the people of Mumuye and Kona.

Following the development, the state government has set up machinery to identify the culprits and the cause of the crisis with the aim of bringing them to book.

The government regretted that Kona and Mumuye people, who have co-existed for centuries, could now pick up arms against one another, describing the action as a deliberate attempt to undermine constituted authority.

The crisis, which began this week, had also  led to the burning of over 400 houses and the consequent displacement of thousands of people.

The displaced are now taking refuge in refugee camps in Jalingo, Zing, Yorro and Lau Local Government Areas.

Nigerian Tribune findings revealed that the situation in the refugee camps is unwholesome in view of their health implication for women and children.

As of the time of filing this report, security had been beefed up in the three affected local governments areas.
