15 killed in Kano floods
Headlines, Kano, State News Tuesday, August 28th, 2012Fifteen persons have been confirmed dead in floods which also destroyed property estimated of N120m in Kano State on Tuesday, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
The state Rehabilitation and Emergency Relief Agency, which confirmed the deaths, added that over 2,000 persons were displaced.
Director of Operations at the agency, Alhaji Shehu Maitama, told the News Agency of Nigeria that farmlands were washed away in Doguwa and Tudun Wada local governments.
Maitama said houses were destroyed in Bagwai, Bebeji, Gabasawa, Garun Malam, Karaye, Nassarawa, and Sumaila.
He said the agency had requested relief materials from the state government, after visiting the affected areas.
The agency chief also said the National Emergency Management Agency had been informed about the incident and that its verification team was being expected.
Meanwhile, Adamawa State House of Assembly has constituted a committee to attend to the needs of victims of Monday’s flooding that killed 10 persons in the state.
Many communities were ravaged by flood water released from Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.
Alhaji Sadiq Ibrahim (PDP-Fufore/Gurin) said his constituency was the most hit because it shares borders with Cameroon.
The lawmaker said, “Since 1982 when Cameroon constructed this dam, the destruction of lives and farmlands from water being released from the dam has been a recurring phenomenon.”
On its part, the state government summoned an emergency with the acting chairmen of the affected local government areas.
The affected local governments are Yola North, Yola South, Girei, Fufore, Numan, Lamurde, and Demsa.
