75 make First Class as UI turns out 1,647 graduates

The University of Ibadan yesterday kick started its four-day 2011 graduation ceremony with a total of 1,647 graduating students from the faculties of Arts, Science, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Pharmacy, Public Health, Technology and Law.
Out of the graduating students that came out with First Class honours degrees, 19 came from the Faculty of Arts, 22 from the Faculty of Science, Technology, 30 while Law had four students .

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Isaac Adewole, in his address at the graduation ceremony held at the Trenchard Hall of the university, disclosed that two, out of the four students that made First Class honours at the Bachelor of Law degree examination also made First Class honours at the last Law School examinations, adding that the students repeated the same feat at the Law School.

He said as a demonstration of the institution’s commitment to develop a 21st century workforce for the country, the university was offering all first class graduands an automatic scholarship to pursue postgraduate programmes of their choice in the university.
Professor Adewole said further that, as part of the institution’s management to provide a forum for education in leadership, active students unionism had been resuscitated in the university after a decade of ban, adding that with the embargo lifted on students’ unionism, the university was heralding a new dawn in student unionism.

He stressed that the University of Ibadan had never failed in its effort at ensuring proper training of its students so that they could compete favourably with their counterparts in other parts of the globe.
As a manifestation of this fact, Professor Adewole said the University of Ibadan was recently ranked as the best in Nigeria and 41 in Africa from its earlier 11th and 107th position respectively by webo-metric ranking of world universities in its July, 2011 edition, adding that the significant improvement was as a result of concerted efforts of both staff and students.

He stressed that the institution would not relent in its efforts at improving the teaching and learning environment in the university.
