Aiyegbeni Inspires Leicester, Utaka Scores

YAKUBU Aiyegbeni continued his good run for his championship side, Leicester City, scoring the second goal in the 4-2 defeat of Millwall yesterday.

The Super Eagles striker made a goal-scoring debut last weekend and his coach, Sven Goran Eriksson will be happy he made the move for the Nigerian striker.

The win also brought to an end Millwall’s unbeaten nine-game league run as they moved within range of the play-offs.

Steve Morison missed a penalty for the visitors before Lloyd Dyer fired in from 12 yards for the home side.
And, even though James Henry equalised, Ayegbeni Yakubu produced a clinical finish and then set up Sol Bamba to score from close range.

Jack Smith converted a Millwall penalty but they had Jens Berthel Askou sent off before Bamba secured a Foxes win.

Leicester may have played more games than their closest rivals but the victory moved them level on points with Millwall and put them just four points off the play-off spots.

John Utaka was also on target for Portsmouth in the 2-2 draw against visiting Leeds United.
Substitute Davide Somma scored with his first touch to earn Leeds a point at Portsmouth in a match twice halted for floodlight failure.

Joe Ward fired Pompey ahead from Liam Lawrence’s cutback, before Luciano Becchio levelled from close range.
Utaka’s angled drive restored Pompey’s lead but Leeds levelled for a second time when Somma lashed home a minute after coming on.

The game was then interrupted twice late on when the floodlights went off. Leeds were first to threaten when Max Gradel forced Portsmouth goalkeeper Richard Ashdown to punch away his thumping 25-yard drive in the second minute.

Portsmouth responded and almost took the lead two minutes later when Ibrahima Sonko met Lawrence’s corner with a firm header, only for the ball to rebound off the crossbar.

Greg Halford twice went close with headers from two more Lawrence corners and both David Nugent and Utaka fired off target as the home side took control.
