ANPP Urges FG to Avert ASUU Strike

The All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) has called on the Federal Government to implement its agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in order to avoid disruption of academic activities in the tertiary institutions.

The party said in a statement signed by its National Chairman, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, that the country’s educational standards had fallen to a regrettable level due to incessant strikes by workers.

“Our great political party is worried about the on-going dispute between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). In the circumstance, we urge the Federal Government to abide by the agreement it entered into with ASUU,” he said.

According to him, the government should realise that trust was an important component of the social contract between government and the people.

He said it was important for the Federal Government to keep its own side of the agreement with ASUU in the interest of good conscience and sincerity of purpose.
The leadership of ASUU had threatened to commence a one-week warning strike by Thursday to press home its demands for better working conditions.

Onu said ANPP believed education was an important instrument for the peace and development of our nation.
“It is regrettable that in recent times, standards have fallen to the extent that many parents now send their children to schools in other countries. A few years ago, it was overseas. Now, it is our immediate neighbours. This is unacceptable and needs to be addressed urgently.

“For too long, students in our schools, especially those in tertiary institutions, enroll without knowing when they will graduate. Incessant strikes have introduced instability in our school system and distorted the school calendar,” he said.
This has become an embarrassment,” he said.

Onu said for Nigeria to redress the unfortunate situation, the government should consider the agreement it entered with ASUU and stop prolonging the issue.
“We call on the Federal Government to keep to the agreement it reached with the Academic Staff Union of Nigeria Universities and prevent the looming strike,” he added.wp_posts
