Boko Haram bombs prison warder

The temporary tranquility of Maiduguri was broken on Thursday afternoon as the Boko Haram men bombed a prison warder while attempting to pick up his children after closing from school.

Daily Sun gathered that the prison warder had driven to a private school along Baga road on Thursday afternoon at about 1 pm in his car when the Boko Haram struck.
Though it was not clear how the sect got to the scene as at press time but sources said the Boko Haram men numbering about three arrived the area on two motorcycles and must have trailed the man from his office. Another source also claimed the three children were ordered out of the car by the sect members, adding that they locked the doors before they detonated the explosive.

“Nobody could say in particular how and when they arrived at the place, but we saw about three persons taking off on two motorcycles in different direction as soon as the blast occurred. The car went in flame immediately and many people in the area scampered for safety because of the blast,” Christopher, who sells lubricant around the area disclosed.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abdullahi Lawal, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) confirmed the incident, adding that the warder was bombed while attempting to carry his children. He however said the command was yet to get the detail as at press time even as he promised to furnish journalists with details of the incident.

There were fears in the city that the Boko Haram men may strike on Sunday during the inauguration ceremony, a development that might have prompted the police and army to beef up security around the Ramat Square, venue of the occasion while also intensifying surveillance and patrol in the city.

A press release from the police command signed by the PPRO on Thursday said “all necessary security arrangements have been put in place to ensure a hitch-free democracy day anniversary and inauguration of the Governor-Elect.” The release urged parents and guidance to have firm control of their children and wards against “any act capable of causing breach of peace before, during and after the event.”
