Boko Haram : Offshoot of decayed economy – Amaechi
Headlines Thursday, July 28th, 2011Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State has described the emergence of the outlawed group, Boko Haram, as an offshoot of the decay inherent in the Nigerian economy.
He said the disparity in the economic and social life of the people and those in the corridors of power had become inimical to the growth and development of the country.
The governor made this submission on Wednesday in his keynote address at the opening of a three-day investors/issuer education programme organised by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in collaboration with the state government.
“If we want the Boko Haram crisis to stop, we must replicate what we did in the Niger Delta in the North,’’the governor declared.
According to him, there is need for the three tiers of government to evolve policies that would develop the agriculture sector, improve security, provide accessible infrastructure and jobs for the people, noting that anything short of this would continue to depreciate the value of lives of the citizenry.
“If specific steps are not taken to close the gap in between the haves and haves not, the country will be continue to be a veritable ground for the breeding of armed gangs and other people of questionable characters,’’the governor added.
Amaechi, who said the present state of investment in the capital market was worrisome, owing to the depleting state of stocks value in the aftermath of the global economic crisis, advised the commission to do more home work to galvanise investors’ interest in the market.
