Bomb scare at Lagos Airport

Following rumours of possible bomb attack at the nation’s flagship airport, Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, yesterday, passengers and operators were gripped with fear as most of them became suspicious of each other.

However, while speaking to newsmen, Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, Mr. Moses Onireti, affirmed that he contacted some of his officers on the field at the airport and was informed that there was nothing  of such.

He said that passengers and other airport users should go about their normal activities without fear.
He said: “I am just coming from the office of the officer in charge and he did not tell me of anything like bomb scare; there is no cause for alarm. If there is the officer in charge would have told me about it. People should go about their normal activities.”

Some of passengers told Vanguard that it was normal for them to panic at such rumour as a result of bombings in parts of the country in the last few months.

Mr. Simson, a passenger at the departure terminal, pointed out that the recent explosion at Moscow Airport and series of explosions in Nigeria last year, must have triggered up the fear among passengers. He added that security presence at the airport was encouraging.

He said: “On your way in here, you would admit that there are enough security personnel on ground, but people are frightened because if it could happen in a civilised city as Moscow, it may be difficult to stop it.”

from happening in Nigeria,” he said. “We only have to keep praying for our country.” He said.

Early this month, the Nigerian Police Force and other law enforcement agents at the Lagos airport swung into action by effecting stringent security checks on motorists moving in and out of the airport, and days later, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) carried out a high power security meeting with various organizations and intelligence outfits in a bid to ensure safety across Nigerian
airports.

Vanguard reearch work has it that the screening and stringent security meaures were due to the bombings recorded across Nigeria and preparations for the forth coming general elections.
