The life and times of the General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, was recently revisited in Lagos.
It was the public presentation of his biography titled Enoch Adejare Adeboye at 70: The Story Behind the Glory, edited by a Professor of History, Modupeolu Faseke. The event took place at the Nigeria Institute of International Affairs, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The 14-chapter book, written by six authors dwells on the life of Adeboye from childhood to his exploits in the academics and finally his ascension as the overseer of one of the fastest-growing churches in the world.
Describing Adeboye’s life as an ‘open book’, the reviewer of the book Dr. Olumide Ekanade, who represented the Dean, College of Humanities, Redeemers University, Prof. Jide Osuntokun, says the book covers the extreme poverty that surrounded the Adeboyes “that when their father acquired an umbrella, it was a call for celebration” and the then younger Adeboye’s resolve to live a different life from that of his family, at a tender age.
The co-authors are a lecturer at the University of Lagos, Adefemi Adeboye; a lecturer at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Dele Giwa; Bayo Olugbemi of First Registrars; Babajide Faseke and Prof. Olufunke Adeboye.
For Faseke – an Associate Professor, Department of History and International Relations, Lagos State University, Ojo – the inspiration to write the biography came from the need to celebrate and document the history of “an illustrious African”, and the fact that Adeboye, as a former scholar of many years, has not been celebrated enough by academics.
She says, “Biography is a very viable source of reconstructing history. Today’s world is lacking in role models. The so-called role models that people tend to portray, most of us don’t know the sources of their wealth and how they live, and today’s world people no longer care about the source of people’s wealth. All they care about is acquisition of property. And so I believe that any God-fearing historian should be able to portray a good role model for people to be taught and aspire to greater height. I was inspired to write a book on Commonwealth in 2002 and 2003 not knowing that the Commonwealth will adopt that book. The same God inspired me in 2009 to write a book on Enoch Adejare Adeboye at 70. This would appear to be a pioneer academic study of the life and times of Enoch Adeboye, which I have examined critically through the sources available to us.”
Adeboye, who clocked 70 on march 2, was, however absent at the event, for reasons the organisers said were unavoidable.
