Crush B’Haram before 2015, APC tells CDS, others

THE All Progressives Congress has asked the new Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, and the service chiefs to defeat Boko Haram before the 2015 general elections.

The APC also urged them to liaise with other arms of the security agencies to improve the level of security across the country ahead of the 2015 elections.

A statement issued in Port Harcourt on Tuesday by the Interim Chairman of the Rivers State chapter of the party, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, added that the APC was delighted over Badeh’s pledge to end the Boko Haram onslaught by April 2014.

It expressed the hope that such a promise was not made to ensure the speedy confirmation of their appointments by the Senate.

The state APC said, “We are happy to note the earlier promise of the new Chief of Defence Staff to end the Boko Haram insurgency, latest by April this year.

“We wish to congratulate him and the new service chiefs for this feat. We, however, hope that this is not a political statement made to fast-forward their confirmation by the Senate because terrorism is a serious matter, which is not usually ended within the batting of an eyelid.”

Meanwhile, ahead of the 2014  local government election in Rivers State, the Peoples Democratic Party has accused the APC of using polling units in the state as registration centres for its members.

Stakeholders in the state chapter of the PDP, after a meeting in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, said that the action of the APC was a ploy to rig the forthcoming council election in the state.

A communiqué signed by the one of the leaders of the party, Chief John Bazia and 250 others, stated that INEC had yet to commence voter registration exercise.

The PDP called on security agencies and INEC to prevail on the APC to carry out the registration of its members according to the electoral laws in order to prevent the breakdown of law and order in the state.

“The All Progressives Congress in Rivers State is making frantic efforts to take over the functions of INEC by using various polling units in the state as registration centres for its members with the intent to rig the forthcoming local government elections in the state.

“The PDP, as a law abiding party, is calling on all security agencies and INEC to prevail on the APC to carry out their membership registration exercise in line with electoral laws to forestall a possible breakdown of law and order in the state,” the communique reads.

Reacting, the Senior Special Assistant to the Interim State Chairman of the APC, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, told The PUNCH that the complaint by the PDP was an announcement of defeat in advance.

Eze said that the PDP was afraid of the huge turnout for APC membership registration exercise.

“We read with happiness the fear of PDP in Rivers State, based on it latest press statement about the ongoing membership drive and registration exercise of APC in Rivers State and their acceptance that they have lost the local government election in the state, even before a date is announced for the election.

“We sincerely commend and congratulate the party in Rivers State for accepting defeat based on the overwhelming acceptance of the Rivers State people to join the APC in mass.”

“This is a sign of maturity as it is very clear that the PDP is dead in Rivers State and we are happy that this fact is becoming very conspicuous to those still remaining in the party,” Eze said.
