Hassan Lawal,  former minister of works

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has opposed an application by a former minister of works, Hassan Lawal for the release of his passport to enable him travel to Saudi Arabia for religious purpose. Lawal is standing trial with 13 others for alleged money laundering of several billions of Naira.

He had pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was admitted to bail by the trial judge, Justice Adamu Bello. One of the bail conditions is that he should not travel out without the court’s permission.

In furtherance of this, he was ordered to deposit his passport with with the court’s registrar. Shortly after fulfilling the bail conditions, Lawal filed an application seeking the court’s permission to travel abroad and for the release of his passport.
