Elections: Corps members receive allowances in Lagos

Lagos – Corps members participating in the ongoing general elections in Lagos State have started receiving their allowances.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that many corps members on Friday gathered at the state NYSC secretariat to collect the allowances, while others went to the local government secretariats for theirs.

Mr Ladipo Olaniyan, the NYSC Coordinator in the state, told NAN that the payment began on Wednesday, attributing the delay to difficulties encountered in getting the list of the corps members from INEC.

The coordinator appealed to corps members yet to be paid to be patient, as they would receive theirs next week.
“It is true that we had the money but the list of those who are working arrived late from INEC. We started paying them on Wednesday.

“We appreciate their great sacrifices and patience. The NYSC is assuring them that all that is due to them will be given to them.

“There is no need for agitation; we are paying them at the secretariat and in local governments.”

Olaniyan said the NYSC decided to pay the corps members in cash because of the late arrival of the list.

Some corps members told NAN that the payment would motivate them to put in their best in the general elections assignment.

One of them, Miss Chioma Uche, said, “it’s a relief; I have finished all my money on feeding and transportation. I have even started borrowing.”
However, some corps members complained that they had yet to get their allowances.

Mr Lekan Aji, who serves as INEC ad hoc worker in Ibeju Lekki, claimed that no corps member in the area had been paid.

“We have been carrying out this national assignment with our own money; this is not good enough. I spend about N2,000 to get to my polling unit.

“We were told to come to the NYSC secretariat on Thursday and Friday for our money, still we have not been paid.
