Governor T.A. Orji and Nigeria at 54 – By Madubuko Hart

By Madubuko Hart | Lagos | October 17, 2014 – I was glad reading a press briefing by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Abia State, Mr. Charles Ajunwa, saying that his boss has called for peace and unity among all Nigerians regardless of their religious, political or ethnic divergences.

It is something to be joyful about when the governor admonished that all the perceived problems besetting the country would be things of the past, adding that this can only be achieved if the peoples of Nigeria can avoid ethnic jingoism and religious intolerance and, embrace all as one.

That reminded me that the governor had always talked about peace and unity, which invariably posits him as a man of peace, if we have to believe in the injunction which says that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Governor Theodore Orji who was recently awarded with the prestigious National Honours Award as Commander Order of the Niger (CON), because he is a preacher of peace, dedicated the award to his people of Abia State, irrespective of all the tension that the award had created in the state.

The intension of the governor to dedicate the award to his people, according to him, was for what he described as their support to the policies and programmes of his administration. The governor believed that he would not have come that far that qualified him for the award if the people had not supported him. He believed that, “Governance is all about the people, not for self-aggrandizement.”

His utmost joy for the award was that no sitting governor from the state had received such award except him. So, he is the first. Nigerians have noted that the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Charles Ajunwa has been working round the clock in making sure that all went well in Governor Orji’s administration, while the governor would always say that the virtues of Jesus Christ should be an example for everyone who seeks the greatness of Nigeria.

According to the governor, the life of Jesus Christ is characterized by great virtues that include love. Like the governor reminded, he said that as Christians, the love of Jesus Christ to mankind is immeasurable and can only be understood through his works that is known to be filled with compassion.

It is imperative to write that Governor Orji had always believed the country can overcome its challenges only through love. He had even hinged his point, saying, Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. That is what the Holy Bible tells us in the book of 1 John 4: 7. “God is the father of love. Love is a gift, given to us without merit.”

According to him, it stands true, and we must choose to abide in it by living in the commandments that allow us to have unity with God. Love is found in God, for God is love. Love produces unity and that is what is going to keep our nation together. Our nation needs to stand together to overcome.

He also believed that those inciting the public against the leadership of this country through false alarms are doing so for selfish reasons without the love of the country in their hearts. This could have moved an observer to saying: We have a Peace loving governor, who believes in fairness and equity.

His legacy projects speak for him, according to the observer, and can never be forgotten easily. Abia is as calm as still water upon the troubles of opposition politicians. The cordiality that exists between him and the security operatives cannot be overemphasized.

Another said: Kudos to the Abia State Governor (Ochendo Global) and the citizens of Abia State at large. Ochendo Global has been the pacesetter in terms of developmental projects in Abia State… He merits more than that was given, and that’s why God has been paving ways for him. He is a peace loving Governor, and that’s why he always campaigns for peace. Peace will never depart from his abode.

However, I beg of all Nigerians to join the governor in this peace crusade to resolve the indifferences in the country. According to the governor, insecurity shall soon fizzle out if we rediscover ourselves as one people and harness the strength in our diversity. Ajunwa would say that his boss has expressed his art in governance without suspicion.

To Ajunwa, this is the much reason the governor has achieved a lot under his administration project tagged “Legacy Project”. Ajunwa had said that Abia State was peaceful and has had everything to celebrate with all the states in the country on the occasion of Nigeria at 54. His was that his boss’s government has been translucent in governance. To Ajunwa, the governor has brought kidnapping to a halt and other menaces that were once ravaging the state. He believed that it’s a thumb for the governor who meant peace for the state and Nigeria at large.

Information from Ajunwa was that the governor believes so much in President Goodluck Jonathan that he had so much been calling on all Nigerians to embrace the president because the president had in his capacity been doing everything possible to take the country to “its manifest destiny of growth, progress and development” and “entrenching democracy in the country through his laudable transformation agenda which has raised the bar of governance in Nigeria.”

While the overtures of the governor were okay in his calculation, it behooves on Nigerians to put every measure in place to establish peace and growth in the country.
