Henry Okah gets 24 years jail term over Nigeria’s Indep. day bombings
National Politics, Top Stories Tuesday, March 26th, 2013A South African court has sentenced ex-leader of the Movement for
the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, (MEND) Henry Okah to 24 years
in prison over 2010 bombings of Nigeria’s Independence day
celebrations in Abuja.
About 12 people died and several wounded in the attack.
Three months ago the South Arica court found Mr Okah guilty of
engaging in terrorist activities, conspiracy to engage in terrorist
activity, and delivering, placing, and detonating an explosive device
during the Independence Day bombing.
Following his conviction, the court today handed down a 24 year jail
term to the South Africa-based Nigerian ex-militant leader.
He was also given 13 years for threatening South-African government
when he was arrested, the 13 year will run concurrent with the 24
year sentence.
The judge said the state had proven Okah’s guilt beyond a
reasonable doubt.
