ICAN boss seeks death penalty for corrupt officials
Latest Politics Wednesday, August 24th, 2011The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has advocated death penalty for corrupt government officials.
ICAN President, Professor Francis Ojaide, made the call on Tuesday in Abuja, during his courtesy visit to the Office of Auditor General of the Federation.
Professor Ojaide, who said no ICAN member had been found guilty of corruption stated that ICAN believed in zero tolerance for corruption.
Disclosing that there were laid down procedures for dealing with corrupt members of the institute, the ICAN president said anyone involved in corruption practices would first be made to appear before the ethics committee and later the inspectorate tribunal which, he said, was like a high court.
While advocating death penalty for corrupt government officials, Professor Ojaide said if an official charged with corruption was made to forfeit all his ill-gotten wealth in addition to facing the guillotine, the high incidence of corruption in the country would be reduced.
To ensure transparency and accountability in governance, the ICAN boss charged the Auditor General of the Federation, Mr Samuel Tyongogo Ukura, to ensure the auditing of accounts of ministries, department and agencies and that of the federation.
Commenting on the six-year term single tenure for political office holders, the ICAN boss said the institute supported it based on the belief that those who would come after the straight six years single term, would build on the achievements of their predecessors and thus eliminate the incidence of violence and destruction of property.
In his response, the Auditor General said like ICAN, his office was also engaged in transformation activities such as performance audit, where the office of auditor general looks at the objective of a programme and its impact, environmental audit and risk- based auditing.
