Immigration: EFCC questions former Interior Minister over recruitment stampedes, fraud

(ABUJA)

The immediate past minister of the Interior, Mr. Abba Moro, was grilled yesterday October 19, by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over his alleged involvement in the April 2014 Immigration recruitment incident that claimed over 20 lives.

Spokesman of EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed Moro’s interrogation by operatives of the anti-graft agency. He did not give further insight into the ongoing investigation and interrogation of the former minister.

Daily Sun gathered that the former minister, who was invited last week by the anti-corruption agency, arrived at the national headquarters of EFCC on Monday morning. At the peak of the mass recruitment stampedes, civil society organizations and Nigerians called for the resignation of Moro.

Following his refusal to resign, former president Goodluck Jonathan was urged to sack the Benue-born politician. Again, he declined and instead offered compensation to the families of the victims. The move was criticised by stakeholders who accused the former president of trying to score cheap political points because of the timing of the the March 28, 2015 presidential election, a contest Jonathan eventually lost‎.

Over six million Nigerians reportedly applied for the controversial recruitment. About 700,772 paid N1000 each as online registration fee and over N700 million was generated by the consultant. However, Morro who presided over the ministry, could not account for the revenue.

David Parradang, immediate past Controller-General of Immigration, who was removed by President Muhammadu Buhari in August, could not account for the millions of naira generated either. He was also questioned in September by the EFCC over the same recruitment case.
