Jos Crisis: NANS Senate Calls for Jang’s Resignation

Senate of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for the immediate resignation of Plateau State governor, Jonah Jang, for his alleged inability to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians in the state.
In a statement signed by its Senate President, Nazir Ashiru Galadanchi, after a press briefing yesterday in Abuja, NANS maintained that the “inhuman act of cruelty” that took place in Jos on the eve of Christmas was as a result of government’s negligence in the area of security.
“We condemn this act in totality and we are giving government 72 hours ultimatum to bring perpetrators of this heinous crime to book. We are also calling for the resignation of the Plateau State governor for his inability to protect lives and properties of Nigerians” in the state, Galadanchi said.
The student’s body also advised President Goodluck Jonathan to declare a state of emergency in the state so as to put a stop to the incessant killings of innocent Nigerians.
In another development, the senate of NANS has advised President Goodluck Jonathan to refrain from using NANS as a noble organisation to promote his ambition through unpatriotic endorsements to run for 2011 election.
The body which remained the only non-factionalized body in NANs today condemned the endorsement of the president for the 2011 race and completely dissociates the body from what they describe as an irresponsible act.
“What happened on the 14th December 2010 is never in the interest of Nigerian students; it does not reflect our struggle for a just and egalitarian society,” he said. “President Jonathan does not deserve the endorsement of Nigerian students as he has not done anything to improve our welfare and education.”
He claimed that while their counterparts in the South-east had been on strike for over five months, Jonathan did not show any interest to intervene to return them to campus while they were busy in the struggle to save the nation from a monumental collapse.
“We cannot understand the apathy of President Goodluck Jonathan,” he said.
The body called on the president to hands off the affairs of NANS as the organization was neither a government agency nor a political puppet, but purely a students-based organization with the responsibility of negotiating and fighting for a better welfare of the Nigerian students and the quality of education in the country.wp_posts
