Headlines, Kano, State News Tuesday, July 26th, 2011
The Kano State Government has reaffirmed the existence of the law prohibiting prostitution and the sale and consumption of alcohol in the state.
The Deputy Governor of the state, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, said in a statement signed by his Director of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Bala Dawakinkudu, that the government would continue to enforce the law.
He pointed out that the law which was first introduced during the first tenure of Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso from 1999 to 2003, was meant to sanitise the society and ensure good behaviour.
Ganduje assured that the present administration would extend full support to Hisbah, the law enforcement agency of the Islamic legal code with a view to ensuring its compliance throughout the state.
He recalled that about 96,000 bottles of assorted brands of alcoholic beverages were impounded, emphasising that the government would continue its clampdown on prostitutes in the state.
According to him, the alcohol beverages intercepted will be destroyed very soon as stipulated by law, adding that the state government will strengthen the existing Shariah law.
Meanwhile, the state government plans to identify the factor affecting Qu’ranic recitation competitions, known as Musabuqah, with a view to reviving it.
Ganduje, who further assured that the competition would be established across the 44 local government areas in the state, expressed this in his office when he received the Al-Ishiyya Islamic Foundation.
He said, “Kano occupies a leading position in the world in Qu’ranic competition and government would not fold its arms to watch such an unfortunate development affects the progress of Musabuqah in the state.”
