Killer cop dismissed as youths petition IG over murdered colleague
Headlines, Nigerian Police Monday, August 22nd, 2011The Nigerian Police Command in Anambra State has dismissed the trigger-happy police sergeant who, eight days ago, shot and killed a 26-year-old youth, Mr. Onyeka Agupudo in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government of Anambra State.
His dismissal came just as Agulu youths under the aegis of Agulu Youth Development Empowerment Committee (AYDEC) petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on the gruesome murder, demanding justice and N150 million compensation for the family.
Agupugo who hails from Okpuifite village, Agulu met his death while allegedly trying to mediate in a quarrel between a policeman and a commercial motorcycle rider (Okada) over N20 at a police checkpoint, Nwagu junction, Agulu.
Confirming the dismissal of the officer after trial to Daily Sun yesterday, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka said, he would be arraigned in court today for murder.
However, in their petition to the IGP which was copied Governor Obi and three others and signed by the President of the body, Uchenna Okoye, Agulu youths also demanded for the immediate release of the body of Onyeka to his family for burial.
The petition reads in part, “Sir, we are not writing to narrate the story of the incidence to you because, we believe that the story is already on air and that you must have heard of it. All we are asking for is for justice to be done. We believe that the Police officer under the umbrella of the Nigeria Police who perpetuated this act did not make a foray into the nation’s Police college. As well, we see it as a product of years of neglect of the police force by successive administrations in the country.
“However, Sir, it is equally important for you as the number one in the Nigeria Police Force to prioritize this letter as it gives us very serious concern. We as well, urge you to use your office to bring the perpetrator of this ugly act to book.
“…Finally, this Youngman lying lifeless in your custody did not do anything to warrant his death. We and the immediate family demand that his corpse be released to the family and that the particular police officer who perpetrated the act be called to book, and a compensation of N150 million be paid to the family to cushion the effect of his death in the family. Let justice prevail at the end.”
