Letter: My gratitude to a kind Nigerian

SIR: Many who have not gone through the ordeal of abduction do not really know what it feels like. I was travelling from Benin to Lagos on January 9, this year to visit my uncle Mr. Richard Odigwe whom I have not seen for over 10 years. So as to beat the impending subsidy removal strike, which lasted for one week, I embarked on the journey very early. There were very few vehicles on the road.

When I got to Ojota, another bus pulled up calling Oshodi, but due to the transport situation I jumped in with two other guys who entered the same bus with me from Benin. After a few minutes’ drive I realised the route had changed and it then dawned on me that I have been abducted and that the two guys that joined the bus with me apparently had been following me all the way from Benin.

They asked if I was going to see my uncle Richard but realising the situation and not knowing my uncle’s business for the past 10 years, I said no and that I had no reason to want to see him as I told them the family feud so that they can see I am not close to him. All the time I was begging and pleading for my life and all the time they kept hitting me until I started bleeding from my mouth and head and later discovered I had sustained a fractured rib. I kept pleading for my life.

After driving around for about an hour they dumped me on the side of the road along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway and zoomed off with all I had on me. It was a good Nigerian who took pity on me, took me to a nearby chemist to treat my wounds and gave me some money to find my way home. There are still very good Nigerians and I remain grateful to that man for his help on that fateful day.

Ben Adigwe,
