Lagos –  Prof. Olukayode Amund, Dean, Student Affairs, University of Lagos, recently renamed Moshood Abiola University, said that authorities would continue to make the institution center of excellence in Nigeria and beyond.

Amund said this on Thursday during the “World Carnival’’ organised as part of activities to mark the 50th anniversary of the institution.

He said that the institution, which was established by the Federal Government in 1962, had achieved a landmark in its 50 years of existence and had been recognised globally.

“The University of Lagos will always remain the foremost citadel of learning and a force to reckon with going by the contributions it has made in national development.

“Having come this far, we will stop at nothing in ensuring that we remain in the forefront of academic excellence and other areas of human development.

“And this explains why we are rolling out the drums you see today and the display of culture with very colourful ambiance,’’ he said.

Amund said that the institution had survived the storm over the years, adding that there was need for it to celebrate by showcasing its achievements to all and sundry.

“We have tag this occasion a carnival because we want to attract stakeholders from various walks of life outside the country and that is why we are mimicking the kind of carnivals common with people from the Caribbean and South America.

“You can see the students are very happy to be part of this historic occasion and they are neck deep in participating fully by adorning flowery costumes that depicts the culture of various countries around the world.

“Many of these students are still around the campus just to participate in the carnival even when they ordinarily ought to be on vacation after concluding their examinations, “ Amund said.

The acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon Bello, said that the university was poised at sustaining the peaceful and conducive atmosphere through team work, open administration and democratic governance.

Bello said that the university management was proud of its products, many of whom were in commanding heights of industry, government and organisations.

The  students who participated in the carnival were mainly drawn from the Creative, Theatre Arts and Music departments of both the university and the Lagos State University (LASU). (NAN)
