Money laundering: US, UK renew support for NDLEA
Headlines, NDLEA (Anti-Drug Agency) Tuesday, February 1st, 2011
The United States and Britain have restated their commitment to support the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in drug, money laundering and organised crime control.
A statement by the agency’s Head, Public Affairs, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, on Tuesday, quoted the United States Consul-General, Mr. Joseph Stafford, as saying that the anti-narcotics agency had demonstrated aggressive determination to dislodge drug trafficking cartels in the country.
The development, according to Stafford, made the US to delist Nigeria from the drug Majors List.
“The United States government is impressed with the performance of the NDLEA under its present leadership. We can see the determination and we can also see the results. This was why my country decided to remove Nigeria from the drug Majors List few months ago. We are prepared to work with the agency and support the campaign against illicit drugs,” Stafford stated.
Also, the West African representative of the Serious Organised Crime Agency of the United Kingdom, Mr. Michael Dockree, lauded the anti-corruption posture of the agency.
Dockree noted that any anti-drug organisation that was not corruption free could not win the war against drug barons.
“As an agent working with officers of the agency in the field, I consider it expedient to commend the anti-corruption posture of the NDLEA leadership. We know what it takes to work in such a difficult environment. We enjoy working with the agency and will continue to enlarge our scope of operation,” Dockree stated.
