Murder of banker wife: I saw husband’s blood-soaked hand –Co-tenant

A prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of a man who allegedly killed his banker wife yesterday told a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja that he saw blood on the hands of the husband as at the time the incident occurred.
At the resumed hearing on the matter before Justice Lateefat Okunnu, a co-tenant to the couple, Adewale Adeyemi told the court that he saw that the deceased was stabbed in the chest, face and head.

Akolade Arowolo had been arraigned last month on a one-count charge of murder of his wife, Titilayo and he had pleaded not guilty.
While being led in evidence by the Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs Olabisi Ogungbesan, Adeyemi, who is a co-tenant of the deceased and her husband at 8, Akinde Street, Isolo, gave his eyewitness account of the incident.
According to him, he took his wife to work that morning and on his way back, dropped the car with his mechanic for repair. He stated that when he got home, he heard the sound of metal objects falling down from the top flat but when he went outside to know what it was, he saw the defendant rushing out of the house with blood on his hands.

“I decided to join commercial bus back home but before I could get to the bus stop it has started raining. I waited for about 20 to 30 minutes for the rain to stop and when it was taking too long I took a bike home and got home drenched.
“I was in my apartment trying to change my drenched clothes and make some coffee when I had a sound of metal object fell down from the top flat. I was curious but couldn’t identify what exactly it was.

“Minutes later, I heard the sound of someone who turned out to be my neighbour, Mr. Akolade coming down from his flat up stairs and I quickly opened my door to ask what happened. But I noticed that there was a deep cut on his palm soaked with blood. I tried to find out what happened but he seemed to be in a hurry.
And called the gateman, Sheidu to open the gate, he entered his car and drove out.
“Immediately Akolade drove out, I quickly entered my apartment and locked the door thinking he had been attacked and I called my wife and a neighbour, Bayo Ajakaiye to inform them what happened. Later that day, out of curiosity, we went to his flat to knock at the door to see if there’s anybody in there but no response. We also tried to call the phones of Akolade and his wife, no response. It was at that point we decided to report the matter to the police the following day at the Aswani Police Station,” Adeyemi said.

He told the court that those metal objects that fell later turned out to be a broken knife and a hammer which were later taken away by the police officers who came to examine the house after the neighbours reported at the station.
Further trial has been fixed for February 20, 2012.

While saying that he had never noticed any quarrel between the couple before that fateful day and that all the tenants got along well, Adeyemi said that when the cotenants went to report the matter; the police confirmed that no one, not even Akolade had come to make any report. He said the police later called them to come and identify a car found around Osolo Way which turned out to be that of the defendant. Further trial has been fixed for February 20, 2012.
