New minimum wage: Nasarawa NLC gives gov 48-hr ultimatum

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Nasarawa State has given Governor Umar Tanko Al-Makura 48 hours to implement the N18, 000 minimum wage or else they would embark on indefinite strike.

State Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Asoloko Maku, who disclosed this to Daily Sun yesterday, also said Governor Al-Makura had betrayed the confidence reposed in him by the state workers due to his inability to implement the new minimum wage as promised.

According to Maku, when the Labour in the state met with Governor Al-Makura shortly after he assumed duties as governor, “he said he would implement the N18, 000 minimum wage, and also during the inauguration of the new permanent secretaries early this month, he pledged to implement the new minimum wage, but to our surprise when the new table came out for the full implementation of the new minimum wage the governor through the state Head of Civil Service, Dr. Amos Akawu and Director, Labour, Mr. Thomas Ogiri rejected the payment table, saying they would not be able to pay and their actions prompted the state NLC to issue 48 hours ultimatum to the government to accept the table and immediately implement the N18,000 minimum wage or else the state civil servants would embark on an indefinite strike as from Friday, August 25.”

While calling on the workers to be calm and wait for further direction, the state NLC chairman said Labour was doing its best to ensure an amicable solution to the problem. He called on Governor Al-Makura to set a pace by ensuring the full implementation of the new minimum wage.
State Head of Service, Dr. Amos Akawu could not be reached on phone as he switched-off his handset, but a source in his office said he was attending a crucial meeting.
