Nigerian-born Canadian professor among victims of Ethiopian Airlines crash

The Canadian Politician (Toronto)- Global Affairs Canada has confirmed that Carleton University professor, Pius Adesanmi, was among the 18 Canadians who died in the Ethiopian Airlines crash on Sunday. There were no survivors

He had the following Bible verse by his picture – “If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me – Psalm 139:9-10.”

in the plane carrying 149 passengers and 8 crew members. Until his untimely death, Professor Adesanmi was the director of Carleton University’s Institute of African Studies as well as a professor at the university.

A statement from the university’s dean of the faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Pauline Rankin, lauded his academic gallantry. “He worked tirelessly to build the Institute of African Studies, to share his boundless passion for African literature and to connect with and support students,” she said. He was a scholar and teacher of the highest calibre who leaves a deep imprint on Carleton.”

A tweet from the university president and vice chancellor, Benoit-Antoine Bacon, echoed similar sentiments. The president stated that the entire university community is in shock at this sudden demise of one of their own. “The entire Carleton community is grieving the tragic death of Prof. Pius Adesanmi, a towering figure in African and post-colonial scholarship. Our thoughts are with all those who knew and loved Prof. Adesanmi and with everyone who suffered loss in that tragic crash in Ethiopia.

A colleague, Aboubakar Sanogo, stated that Nigerian-born professor Adesanmi was a “serious intellectual…he’s a fantastic collegeaue, one of our most brilliant minds,” he said. “We are really proud and happy to have him as the head of the institute,” he concluded.
ET Flight 302 was enroute to Nairobi, Kenya from the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa when it went down six minutes into the flight. There has been no statement on the cause of the crash.
