North cautioned against plot to replace Sambo
Latest Politics Monday, April 8th, 2013PLOT to replace Vice President Namadi Sambo by some northerners may not augur well for the continued development of the North and the country in general, a chieftain of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Ambassador Ladan Shuni has said.
Shuni, who is the vice chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the ACF, said in an interview with newsmen in Kaduna, at the weekend, that Sambo should be commended for being loyal to President Goodluck Jonathan over the years, as he had within the period, carried out developmental projects across the North and Nigeria.
He alerted that the plot was to replace Sambo with a more ambitious politician from the region, who would always be at loggerhead with President Jonathan, similar to what happened during the Obasanjo/Atiku era.
His words: “May be people are expecting Sambo to do what former Vice President Atiku Abubakar did under the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, by being always at loggerhead with his boss.”
“I think Sambo should be commended and praised for his loyalty to his boss, President Jonathan. The loyalty is commendable. I don’t think loyalty is an offence, because if the president and his vice are fighting, there will be no peace; there will be no progress.
“Sambo as the leader of the North has contributed a lot to the region — talk of insecurity in the zone, we, in the ACF know the role the Vice President played in peace making in the region. He has been involved in the issue of dialogue with Boko Haram, he has been reaching out to every sector in the country, in order to bring about unity and sanity in this nation.
“I don’t know, may be they wanted Sambo to be briefing them on whatever he has done in terms of bringing peace and economic development to the North.
“I know because when I was the chairman of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Sambo played a role in reviving the railway. It was through his effort the corporation was revived and is now running through the North. Sambo was actually going round to ensure there w\s rail transportation between the North and the South.
“For many years, the rail transportation was down, but when Sambo came, he focused and put a lot of interest in ensuring that railway became effective in the North and that has become reality.
“People have been saying he is not so close to the Northern governors; it is not true. He has a very cordial relationship with them.
Every governor goes to him in Abuja. What people don’t know, they should not speculate, as it is not proper. He cannot just wake up and begin to tell people of his relationship with the governors. Can they bring any evidence to prove Sambo is not liked by any governor in the North or in the country?” he queried.
