The saying in local parlance that “Warri no dey come last” was yesterday rubbished in far away Beijing, China where Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare finished last in the final of the 100m women event of the on going IAAF World Athletics Championships.
Okagbare who ran on lane nine started poorly in the race won by Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. Okagbare who is Nigeria’s biggest hope for medal returned a time of 11.2 seconds.
Interestingly, Fraser-Pryce, even in victory was not a happy girl, no thanks, to the time she returned. The Jamaican speed star told BBC Sports that her target was to break her personal best time of 10.7 seconds.
“I’m getting tired of 10.7s. I just want to put a good race together and hopefully in the next race I get the time I’m working for. I definitely think a 10.6 is there. Hopefully I will get it together,” she told BBC Sports.
Yesterday’s race was one in which Fraser-Pryce narrowly held off Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands. The 28 year old Jamaican started strongly but was almost caught by Schippers on the line. Schippers had to settle for the silver.
For Fraser-Pryce, who is the fourth quickest woman of all time over 100m, the Beijing feat was a sixth career gold at the World Championships having won the 100m and 200m double in 2013.
Schippers, a heptathlete bronze medallist two years ago, finished ahead of American Tori Bowie in third.
It was a national record for 23-year-old Schippers, who only committed to sprinting in June, while Bowie, 24, herself a former long jumper, collected her first major medal.
