Polls: All fears are gone – Mark
Elections 2011 Friday, April 15th, 2011Senate President, Senator David Mark, has submitted that the perseverance, commitment and patriotism displayed by Nigerians towards the success of the 2011 elections have erased the fears hitherto expressed by skeptics about the polls.
Senator Mark told a delegation of the European Union (EU) international observers to the 2011 elections in Nigeria that Nigerians had demonstrated a sense of purpose and nationalism towards the success of the elections.
He admitted that the electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), had some administrative and logistics challenges but expressed optimism that, “We are on the right track. We shall get it right.”
He appreciated the support of the EU and other donor agencies towards the success of the elections in Nigeria but pointed out that international agencies should not set a template on how the exercise should or should not be.
“We appreciate your positive contributions but any support that would not be positive towards the success of the elections is not needed,” Mark stated.
Every democracy, he stressed had its own peculiarity according to the tradition and culture of the people.
Briefing the Senate President, Head of the EU observation mission and former Prime Minister of Slovenia, Aloysius Peterle, noted that the preliminary report about the election was impressive.
