Reps reject motion to probe FG on non-release of past White Papers
House, Legislature Thursday, July 14th, 2011The House of Representatives, on Thursday, rejected a motion that sought to probe pending reports of various panels and commissions of inquiry set up by the Federal Government over the years on major socio-political and economic crises in the country with no white paper issued on such reports as members unanimously voted against it.
Honourable Olisa Imeagwu from Delta State had moved the motion entitled, “status of reports of investigative panels and commissions of inquiry on major socio-political and economic crises in the country” which sought the support of the House to “mandate the relevant committees of the House when constituted, to investigate the matter and report to the House within four weeks.”
Moving the motion, he hinted that the volume of reports generated from investigations and inquiries bordering on major socio- political and economic aspects of the nation had no white papers issued on them.
While opposing the motion, Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa noted that the motion was vague and cumbersome and should be thrown out while, other members who also spoke against the motion were of the view that the motion lacked a purpose and mandating its relevant committees to investigate such reports would overburden the committees which have enormous work to do.
When the motion was put to vote by the Speaker, Hon Aminu Tambuwal who presided over the plenary members unanimously kicked against it.
In another development, the House was divided over a motion moved by Hon Mohammed Bago asking the House to intervene in the outbreak of Cholera in Chanchaga Federal Constituency of Niger State which had claimed 113 lives and 497 hospitalized.
However after heated debate on the motion, the House resolved that both the Local and State governments in the State should use their Primary Health Care Delivery Systems to address the cholera outbreak in the area.
