Robbery: Banks close for business in Akure
Headlines, Ondo, State News Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011Aftermath of the bank robbery in Akure, Ondo State, many banks in the town, on Wednesday, did not open for business for fear of another attack by the robbers.
Some of the banks located on Oba Adesida and Oyemekun road locked their gates, while their workers were also locked inside their premises.
However, some other banks that opened for business had tightened the security around their premises as customers were frisked before being allowed in.
Reacting to the robbery incident, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state raised the alarm over the state of security of lives and properties in the state.
The party, in a statement by its Director of Publicity, Ayo Fadaka, tasked the state government to ensure that the state was safe to live in.
The party also charged security operatives in the state to put machinery in place to enable the people to go about their legitimate businesses without fear of being attacked by robbers and other social urchins.
Fadaka said: “ The incessant activities of armed robbers in Ondo State is getting worrisome as hardly does a fortnight pass without an attack on banks in recent times, this development is indeed disturbing and equally responsible for the inexplicable and avoidable deaths of citizens.
“As a party, we make bold to say that not a single attack of this nature was perpetrated anywhere when our party held sway in the governance of this state. It is time for Dr Mimiko to sit down and work, perhaps in the hope of at least wanting to bequeath something to this state.”
