Severed private part: Bauchi govt, victim’s parents clash over bills

By Suzan Edeh

Bauchi—Following the directive by Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State that a 12-year-old boy, whose private part was cut, should be treated at the expense of the state government, there has been a disagreement between the parents of the boy and the Bauchi State Ministry for health over his treatment.

Ayuba’s throat was cut and his private part severed by a youth in their area recently. The governor had visited the boy and later sent his Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sani Malami, who pledged that government will take full responsibility for the treatment of the boy.

Vanguard gathered that initially, the boy was referred to Gombe referral hospital and when government intervened, he was referred to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where he spent 27 days.

Parents of the boy accused officials of the Ministry for Health of not taking the treatment of the boy serious, saying the boy deserves better treatment outside the country because of the assurance the state government gave them.

They alleged that they had to borrow money before they could complete the last 27 days at the Teaching Hospital, because the N400,000 given to them by the state had finished in the course of running tests and investigations at the teaching hospital.

They added that the initial N200,000 given to them by the government was used to settle debt on the treatment of the boy at Gombe Federal Medical Centre.

State Commissioner for Health, meanwhile, said: “The parents of the boy were ungrateful to the government because I had to force them to take the boy to the Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri, after they had collected the N400,000 and I knew the consultant there was capable of treating the boy.”
