State of the nation: Muslim govs, Sultan, Emirs, clerics meet in Abuja

Apparently disturbed by by challenges facing the country and the Muslim community in particular, a must –attend conference has been scheduled to hold in Abuja middle of this month by a coalition of Muslim organizations in Nigeria to discuss the state of the nation.

Those expected to attend the two-day confab include the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, all the Emirs, Muslim governors, national and state lawmakers as well as Muslim clerics. A statement issued by the Coalition which was signed by the Acting Chairman, Publicity Sub-Committee, Waziri Isa Gwantu said the conference which is a maiden one would also discuss issues that border on the rights and roles of Muslims, challenges in the country’s democratic processes.

Also, expected to grace the occasion are ministers, politicians, lawyers, journalists, students and the general public who are of Islamic faith. According to the statement, “The conference is expected to attract participants from all states of the federation to chart the way forward for the Muslims and to envolve a process of advising and assisting government on the role to play in ensuring good and result oriented governance.

“Another very important aim of the conference is to discuss and suggest solutions to the problems that have been bedeviling and threatening the corporate existence of Nigeria as a sovereign, united and peaceful entity.” The statement also added that, “Intellectuals and scholars from different parts of the country and institutions are expected to deliver incisive papers at the occasion.”
