Tanzanian president, John Magufuli, dies at 61
Africa & World Politics, NNP News Wednesday, March 17th, 2021(NNP) Tanzanian president John Magufuli, has died at the age of 61. Vice President Hassan made the announcement amidst speculations about the president’s health. The anti-corruption president had not been seen in public since Feb 27.
The president popularly known as “the bulldozer” for his tough stance on corruption, took office in 2015. He ruled with an iron fist, shutting down media houses, imprisoning opponents and limiting public political gatherings.
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the president told his countrymen to pray the virus out of the country and did not make any plans to import vaccines, rather resorting to herbal medicine and steam huts as cure. Tanzania stopped reporting its COVID-19 numbers in April 2020, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to ask it to comply with health guidelines. The president who was hospitalized in the economic capital of Dar es Salaam, died of heart complications.
