Tension as assassins kill 25-yr-old carpenter in Calabar

Residents of Atu Street in Calabar, Cross River State, have been thrown into confusion, as unknown assassins invaded the area, killing one Mr. Edet Udo.
The remains of Mr. Udo had since been taken home to his village for interment, but tension and panic had continued to pervade the street as scores of people had fled the area to avoid arrest.

The deceased, who lived at number 25, Atu Street was a carpenter and was said to be popular around the area. He was killed penultimate Thursday by men suspected to be cultists.
Reports say as the hoodlums arrived at Mr. Udo’s residence, they knocked at his door and called him out to the main road where they beat him to pulp and eventually killed him. An account had it that the assailants dumped his remains inside a waste bin located along Atu by Nelson Mandela Street.

Some residents who had gone to dump refuse at the bin the following morning saw the corpse of the deceased carpenter and raised the alarm. Their alarm suddenly attracted onlookers and other residents who came to the scene to identify the corpse. Some residents of the area including one Anietie Okon, who spoke with Daily Sun, said the cause of Edet’s assassination was not yet ascertained but sources suspected that the killing may be connected to his business.

A close confidant of Edet, who preferred anonymity said he suspected that a client who had engage his services may have been behind the nefarious act perhaps to revenge his (Edet’s) failure to deliver a job.

The development had left a whiff of tension and panic in the area.
The police in Atakpa Police Station had promised to unearth assailants as investigations continue. One of Etim’s neighbours, a journalist, Mr. Emmah Unah told Daily Sun that the deceased was an easy-going man who would hardly be controversial and therefore wondered what could lead to his assassination.
