US senators urge vote condemning Uganda’s Kony

LRA chief Joseph Kony
A bipartisan group of 33 US senators introduced a resolution Wednesday condemning Uganda’s brutal Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and its villainous leader Joseph Kony, for its rampage there of rape, mutilation and murder.
The measure backs international efforts to “end the threat posed by the LRA” by boosting the capabilities of regional military forces deployed to protect civilians and track down LRA fighters.
“Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army have burned a path of destruction through Uganda and its neighbors in central Africa for the last 25 years,” Democratic Senator Chris Coons said in a statement.
“Joseph Kony represents the worst of mankind, and he and his commanders must be held accountable for their war crimes.
The group of senators backing the text account for a third of the US Senate.
In October, President Barack Obama announced he was deploying 100 troops to Uganda to help regional forces in their fight against the LRA.
The resolution comes as a film calling for the warlord’s capture has become an Internet sensation and reawakened bitter memories in the areas most afflicted by the conflict six years after the war ended in northern Uganda, when Kony left the country for neighboring nations. AFP
