Why IGP Abba was sacked

After more than a week of pressure from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders it was announced today that the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba, was sacked by President Jonathan.

In a curt press release Ruben Abati, the Special Adviser to the President for Media and Publicity, said that “President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has relieved the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba of his appointment and duties with immediate effect.”

The employment termination of IGP Abba was unusual for the Jonathan administration, which would usually offer appreciation and some accolades to outgoing security officials. Mr. Abati’s statement instead elaborated on the credentials of incoming Inspector-General of Police Soloman Arase, current Head of Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department.

SaharaReporters revealed in its exclusive report that President Goodluck Jonathan and PDP leaders developed extensive plans to utilize the national police to rig elections across Nigeria.

According to sources, IGP Abba foiled the plot to abduct the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) Chairman Attahiru Jega from the INEC Collation Center. The scheme was for the former Delta Minister Godsay Orubebe to create a distraction during the vote collation, forcing Chairman Jega to take a recess. Once Jega left the public view, national police officers on his security detail would help turn him over to state security officers who would then kidnap him.

There were also concerns that IGP Abba did not facilitate PDP victory in many States, which may have cost Jonathan his re-election bid. This includes information which leaked regarding AIG Tunde Ogunsakin’s deployment to Rivers State before the gubernatorial elections.

According to reports released by the CLEEN Foundation, which tracked police and military abuses during the 2015 presidential and gubernatorial elections, there were far fewer police and military abuses during the 2015 elections than those held in recent memory.

At the time of publication, there is no official statement on the causes of IGP Suleiman Abba’s termination. Mr. Abati said told a SaharaReporters correspondent that he would not offer comment on the situation.
