Women throng Kano protest

Protesters defied the harsh harmattan in Kano to continue the mass protest against fuel subsidy removal in Kano on Thursday.

And for the first time since the beginning of the mass action, women in their thousands, joined the anti-fuel subsidy removal protest.

The protesters, which also included hordes of youths, gathered as early as 8am after the curfew hours for the mass action.

They converged on the old campus of the Bayero University, Kano and marched from the university premises through Kofar Kabuga, Kofar Famfo to the Kofar Na’isa open ground where lecture and speeches were delivered by several activists.

Most students, ostensibly tired of remaining at home, traders and commercial motorcyclists (Yan Achabas), joined the protest rally.

Businesses were closed just as other commercial activities but security presence was very high particularly in flashpoints.

Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Kano State chapter, Mr. Isah Danguguwa, pointed out that the rally was a struggle for the well being of Nigerians, adding that the strike and protest rally would continue until the Federal Government reversed the new fuel price regime.

The chairman said, “No threat or intimidation will stop the protest; we can only call off the strike if government action on fuel subsidy removal reverses to N65.”

“The turn out of the protesters on the fourth day in the state is impressive, meaning that the struggle will continue’.”

He affirmed that the turnout of women at the rally was a clear indications that Nigerians were bitter with the fuel subsidy removal.”

One of the women, Hajiya Amina Dan Jummai said, “All women in my compound numbering about 15 joined the rally and we’re always ready to come out for any rally called by the NLC/TU.”

She stated that Kano state women were solidly against the removal of the fuel subsidy, and appealed to the Federal government to quickly look at the yearning of the masses and reverse the decision.
