World Refugee Day: MOSOP Condemn Continual Discrimination Against the Ogoni People
Headlines, Niger Delta, Rivers, State News Tuesday, June 23rd, 2020- Call for the resettlement of stranded Ogoni refugees in Benin Republic
- Call for protection for endangered communities especially in Tai and Eleme Local Government Areas
The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has again voiced its non-acceptance of the discrimination and persecution against the Ogoni people in Nigeria.
Speaking yesterday at the organization’s national secretariat in Bori at an event organised by Gbo Bia Feefeelo to mark the World Refugee Day, President of MOSOP, Fegalo Nsuke said Nigeria should respect the political rights of the Ogoni people as a distinct ethnic nationality in the Nigerian federation.
Nsuke said it was important that the rights and dignity of the Ogoni people be respected in Nigeria. He said it was unacceptable to the Ogoni people that only three out of the over two hundred ethnic groups in Nigeria received the gains of self determination and self respect and benefited from the Nigerian federation.
The MOSOP leader noted that the Ogoni people are not happy with the present configuration of Nigeria where the country is split into 36 states largely benefiting the Hausa/Fulani, Yoruba and Ibo who allocated 30 of these states to themselves while the resources that runs the Nigerian federation are provided by the voiceless minorities without any representation in the federation and without any recognition and respect for those minorities whose land do not only generate the resources that runs the country but they are left to suffer the consequences of the revenue generation including massive environmental degradation.
The occasion featured tree planting at the MOSOP Secretariat with president of the Federation of Ogoni Women’s Association, Mrs Namon Nwinde, the president of the National Youth Council of Ogoni People, NYCOP, Theophilus Mbagha Esq and the Coordinator of MOSOP in Bori, Mr Sylvanus Adamgbo planting trees.
Speaking on the significance of the tree planting, president of MOSOP said tree planting is encouraged and should involve every Ogoni as a measure to address the environmental concerns and degradation which the Ogoni people have suffered as a result of Shell’s massive pollution of the area.
Nsuke noted that tree planting will help address the problems of erosion, increase the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere, support efforts to deal with climate change and provide food and medicines for the people.
He highlighted the importance of the World Refugee Day to the Ogoni people whose communities have been destroyed in government/Shell sponsored violence leading to the desertion of several Ogoni communities including Ekporo in Eleme local government area, Gbam, Nonwa, Norkpo, Aabue, Oloko, and several other communities in the Ban-Ogoi axis of Tal local government area with thousands still internally displaced and seeking refuge in other communities.
The MOSOP President also called for government support to the remaining Ogoni refugees in Benin Republic who have been calling for support to return home. He said over 400 Ogoni refugees were stranded in Benin republic with no hope of returning home. They have been forced into menial labour to survive and have become helpless. Nsuke said despite their desire to return home, the Nigerian government was not doing enough to resettle them and help them get back their lives.
