World/Nations Cup qualifiers: Keshi drops Aiyegbeni

Relegated Blackburn Rovers’ striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, might not be a part of the foreign-based players expected to make the list of the Super Eagles’ team that would prosecute the World and Nations Cup qualifiers against Namibia and Rwanda billed for next month at the U.J Esuene Stadium, Calabar.

Sources at the team’s camp revealed that the Eagles’ technical crew excluded the former Portsmouth and Everton forward from the foreign pros that made the list for the crucial of qualifiers for next June due to his poor performances during Eagles’ Nations Cup qualifier against Rwanda.

“There is no iota of truth in the story that Aiyegbeni would be among the invited players. In fact, I have seen the list as an insider and the name of Yak is not among the selected players. I don’t know where they got the story that he would be invited for the June schedules, but he is not going to be among the invited players,” the source noted.

Meanwhile, Eagles’ gaffer, Stephen Keshi, has debunked the report that the list of invited players would be unveiled today (Thursday) in press conference in Abuja, stressing that the team’s list for the twin clash against Namibia and Rwanda would be made public tomorrow (Friday). According to Keshi, “I don’t know where some people got the information that the list is to be released on Thursday. We have never told anybody that and all I know is that the list will be released on Friday at a press conference and not before then.”

He further maintained that the list of players would be used to prosecute both matches against Rwanda and Namibia in June, since there is no way he will be rotating players at such a short interval, adding that doing so will not augur well with the team.
