Yakowa, Fashola, Oni, others commiserate with ThisDay, The Sun

In a swift reaction to the bombing of the Kaduna offices of The Sun, Thisday and Moment newspapers yesterday, the Kaduna State Governor, Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa has described the incident as sad, unbelievable and shocking.

In a statement issued by the governor’s media spokesman, Reuben Buhari, it noted that it was inhuman to subject journalists and any other persons in the society to cruel treatment leading to termination of lives.

The governor also commensurated with the families of those who lost their lives in the explosion and wished those injured, quick recovery, adding that journalists in the state should not to be deterred by the incident, but to see it as associated challenges of nation building.
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola expressed sadness over the bombing of the Abuja and Kaduna offices of Thisday Newspapers Group and the similar attack on the zonal office of The Sun newspapers in Kaduna.

Governor Fashola, who condemned both attacks in outright terms, also condoled with the management of the Thisday and The Sun Newspapers over the bomb attacks, which reportedly claimed several lives while scores sustained varying degrees of injury. He described the attack on the two leading national dailies as uncalled-for and unwarranted, saying the use of violence against unprotected civilians outrightly “contradicts the spirit and letters of the UN Declaration of Human Rights and AU Charter on Human and People’s Rights.”

National Vice Chairman (South-west) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former governor of Ekiti state, Segun Oni also commiserated with Chief Nduka Obaigbena, publishers of Thisday Newspaper over the bomb explosion, which rocked the Abuja and Kaduna offices of the newspaper.

In a statement signed by his media aide, Mr. Lere Olayinka, Oni, who described the news of the bomb explosion as shocking and painful, prayed that God will console the families of those who lost their lives or wounded in the incident.
While describing perpetrators of the dastardly act as enemies of Nigeria, who must not be spared by law enforcement agencies in the country, Oni urged all Nigerians to join hands with security agencies to stem the nefarious activities of the bombers.

He called on the management of Thisday Newspapers not to be deterred by the incident. Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha also condemned the attack on the Abuja and Kaduna offices of This Day and The SUN Newspapers Noting that journalists were constitutionally empowered to embark on their professional duties, he described the incidents as unholy, unwarranted and uncalled for.

The Deputy Speaker who stated that the role of journalists is critical to nation building and the growth of democracy observed that bomb battle against journalists and media houses would not do the nation any good.“Let me appeal to those behind this battle against the media and by extension journalism profession to kindly sheath their swords and give peace a chance,” he stated. He commiserated with the Publisher, management and staff of Thisday and The Sun Newspapers over the attack and the casualties recorded as a result of the attack.

Former minister for aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode in a press statement made available to The Sun, described the incident as unfortunate and called on the Federal Government to put in more efforts in ensuring that the lives and property of Nigerians are safe. He said: “This is a wicked and senseless act and is also a tragedy for Nigeria. I condemn it whole heartedly and my commensuration and heart goes out to my brother, the Publisher of Thisday newspapers, Nduka Obaigbena, editorial board and members of staff of the newspaper which has come to become one of our greatest institutions in Africa.”
