Campus Sex Files (1): Dear Professor Oluchi, a lecturer at my university has the hots for me. I am confused and scared
Campus Sex Files, Headlines Sunday, March 27th, 2016CAMPUS SEX FILES (1)
I am pleased to start this column at New Nigerian Politics to reach out to the hundreds of young women who are subjects of sexual harassment at Nigerian universities. This is my median letter and I hope to respond to more letters from young and distressed female students.

Dear Professor Oluchi:
I attend one of the universities in Imo State. I recently learned from a close friend that one of the lecturers has the hots for me and he has indicated that he would love to take me out for lunch. My problem is, he will be my lecturer next term, should I take him up on his offer to make life easy for me or pretend I am not aware of his interest in me?

Dear Joy:
There should never be a time when you have a romantic or sexual experience with your lecturer. It is morally wrong and could cause a lot of problems down the road. You may not be aware of this, but lecturers who engage their students sexually know themselves and share information that may lead another lecturer in the future to demand sexual favours. I will suggest two things; 1. Avoid having him as your lecturer if possible so you don’t have to deal with him and 2. do not respond to his interest in you in any way. Pretend you are not aware and if he approaches you, politely tell him you are not interested. If he insists, you can report him to the university administration that deals with student affairs.
Sincerely,
Professor Oluchi
Oluchi is a professor in one of the universities (in Nigeria) and dedicates this column to support young female students across the country who may be subjected to sexual harassment by their lecturers, cultists, administrators or male students. Having experienced sexual harassment herself as a university student without institutional or professional support, she feels strongly in leveraging her counselling background to provide as much support to the often helpless victims.
